If you want to convert two garage doors into one, one question decides your timeline, your cost, and your safety: is the centre post load-bearing? Here's what that means and how to find out — without guessing.

What “load-bearing” means for a garage post

A load-bearing post carries weight from above — your roof structure, or a room built over the garage — down to the foundation. A non-load-bearing post carries little or none of that; it may just anchor your door tracks or support the ceiling drywall. Remove a load-bearing post without replacing its support and the structure above has nowhere to transfer its weight. That's when you get sagging, cracking, or worse.

Clues it might be load-bearing (not a substitute for a pro)

  • There's living space above the garage— a bonus room or second storey makes structural load far more likely.
  • The post sits under a beam or where the framing changes direction — walls and posts that run perpendicular to the ceiling joists are commonly load-bearing.
  • You see bracing or brackets at the top of the post.
  • The post lines up over a footing or thickened slab.

None of these are proof. In many single-storey GTA garages the load runs to the outside walls and the centre post supports only the ceiling — but the only way to know for certain is a structural evaluation.

What Ontario law requires

Removing a load-bearing centre post is a structural alteration. Under the Ontario Building Code, that requires a building permit, and the permit application must include P.Eng-stamped structural drawingsfor the new beam that will carry the load. For a simpler opening enlargement, an engineer's stamped letter may be accepted in place of full drawings. Either way, this is not optional — and it protects you.
